Do you want a novel that makes you feel, reflect, and question all at once? It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover might be what you’re looking for. However, I want to start by mentioning that this book tackles sensitive topics like domestic violence, abuse, and sexual violence. If these are triggering topics for you, approach with caution.
Personally, this was a difficult book for me to read because of its connection to my own experiences. My mom survived domestic violence at the hands of my father, and some of the scenes hit extremely close to home. At times, I found myself overwhelmed with conflicting emotions—empathy for Lily, frustration at her choices, and moments of heartbreak.
Despite the emotional heaviness, Hoover’s storytelling drew me in. Her ability to portray complex characters, especially Lily, made me appreciate how nuanced the subject matter was handled. Ryle’s character is layered and disturbing in a way that reflects the reality of abusers, while Atlas serves as a symbol of safety and a reminder of love’s healing potential.
What ultimately made me appreciate this book was the author’s afterword, where Hoover candidly shares her personal connection to the story. Knowing this made the book’s impact even more profound and gave me a greater understanding of its purpose.
