Review
Marketed as a thriller, “The Killing of Faith” by William Holms fell far short of its promise, and it’s one of the rare books I couldn’t bring myself to finish. The writing style was difficult to embrace from the outset, particularly with the clumsy attempt at capturing a teenage girl’s diary voice. Lines like “I’m fifteen, I have a cute and innocent face, soft curves, and straight, skinny legs” came across as unsettling and inappropriate, reading more like an adult man’s perspective of a teenage girl rather than an authentic character portrayal.
The protagonist, Faith, is so self-centered that it’s nearly impossible to root for her, and the narrative struggles to engage or connect on any meaningful level. Despite the promise of a twist ending, I couldn’t justify spending more time hoping for a payoff.
On top of this, the writing often feels condescending, as if the author doesn’t trust the reader to grasp the story without unnecessary explanations. The sex scenes, while minimal, were awkward and poorly executed—lukewarm at best—and overall added nothing to the plot.
That said, taste in books is subjective, and while The Killing of Faith didn’t work for me, it might appeal to others. For instance, I disliked Fifty Shades of Grey, but it became a massive bestseller, proving that not everyone has the same preferences—and that’s okay! If the premise intrigues you, give it a try and form your own opinion.
